A sad day – a Positive Song; Ede Staal

One of those sad days….. I had to go to the funeral of my uncle “Jan”…..
Like they said today; at the moment a close person dies – a little part of you is also dying….

And yes – it really felt like that today…..

As this is an homepage about music…. I will give you a (non English) song today….

Ede Staal – (1941-1986) a “folk” singer from Holland – the province of Groningen….
He sang in Dutch – Danish – English – but mainly in the local dialect.
As I am born in a place close to that province… I do not have any problems with understanding his songs…

He had his first single in 1973 – the local radio station “Radio Noord” was a total fan of him…. Ede even made a kind of “theme song”  for them - “Mien Toentje”…..
Although Ede Staal did not give a lot of concerts… (was not really a favorite thing of him to do…) he became a local hero…. And his first real album (1984) even became  famous outside the local scene!

But at the moment he started to become famous; he was diagnosed lung cancer…..and died on the 22 of July 1986.

And why am I posting a song of him…?
The song (“het het nog nooit zo donker west”) is about an old couple…. the little diseases are coming – but they still can manage their lives nicely…. Children are already living on their own… visiting their parents a lot…. The couple have their little animals  - couple of chickens  a goat and a pig….  at their little house near a dike. But then – in December – the old man gets sick…. his daughter takes him to the city – but the next day he dies…….
And 3 weeks later….. his wife died……also…..
The title says; “it seems to be such a darkness…. but remember; there will always be a light”

This song has been played at the funeral of both of my parents….. and today; it has been played at my uncles funeral…..

Ede Staal – Het het nog nooit zo donker west

Weird little “fact”;
last year they did a “Top200 all times” on Dutch National Radio.
A huge list we could choose from……
I voted – of course – this song of Ede Staal.
The local newspapers of the northern provinces requested their readers to vote for this song. The song was going to be in the top10….. BUT – because of the request of that newspaper; the song got “disqualified”……
Uh….I did not read the newspaper – but; my vote didn’t count…??
